The Nugget first opened in 1955 under ownership of Dick Graves. It was purchased by John Ascuaga in 1960 and developed into the famous casino it is today. Using a variety of attraction including the famous Circus room and celebrity show room that features such headline acts as Liberace, and the Nevada Day parade staple, Bertha the Elephant. The Hotel also hosts the Best In The West Nugget Rib Cook-off annually, one of the largest cook offs in the country. The Casino also hosts the Star Spangled Sparks celebration on the 4th of July, the largest fireworks show in northern Nevada after the New Year eve display in downtown Reno.

The Oyster Bar offers a variety of seafood items on its menu, with the Tailgate Deli rounding out the restaurants with a more casual menu including pizza and deli sandwiches.
